Bring your organisational and communication skills to help support the provision of information for people affected by cancer at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, ensuring they have access to trusted information and resources.
Key Details
- The Information Pod is in West Outpatients Level 2 at The Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.
- We offer you full induction training, and ongoing support for your role.
- We ask you to give at least 2 hours per week at days/times that suit you.

Key Tasks/Responsibilities
- Be available in the Pod to answer questions and provide information to people affected by cancer. These can be people living with or beyond cancer, carers, family, or healthcare professionals.
- Give people using the service the opportunity to talk about their feelings, offering them support through empathy and a listening ear. However, this is not a counselling service, volunteers are not expected to have professional counselling skills.
- We do not expect you to know all the information, but to have the ability to provide empathetic support, signpost and to contact the Macmillan Information Manager, Clinical Nurse Specialist, or health professional if concerns are complex.
- Answer the phone professionally and take written messages.
- Help visitors complete feedback forms.
- Organise booklets and keep information areas well stocked and up to date.
- Check cancer information display areas around the hospital ensuring these are well stocked and tidy.
- Provide support with ordering replacement information.
- Keep information areas clean and clutter free.
- Be aware of role boundaries and request the support of a manager when required.
- Signpost to the appropriate information & resources.
- Always follow the policies, systems and procedures of the hospital and the Trust.
Preferred qualities and skills:
- Empathy and an ability to relate and respond well to people
- Good organisational skills
- Good communication skills
- Initiative and ability to refer complex issues to the right person when needed
- A good understanding of confidentiality
- Basic IT skills or the aptitude to learn basic IT skills
- Ability to work independently with guidance and support
- Interest in cancer care and the services that Macmillan provides
Additional requirements for this role
We ask you to complete a DBS check, and Trust induction training in line with the Hospital Trust volunteering policy.
