The key activities of the Volunteer role include:

  • Participating in focus groups - An opportunity to engage with researchers from the University of Exeter and University of Birmingham.
  • Support work - Sharing cancer services with people living with cancer and families affected by cancer.
  • Event Coordination - Volunteering at GLMCC support groups/workshops to support people living with and affected by cancer.
  • Raising awareness - Help the communities understand early signs of cancer and accessing services early.
  • Attending steering group meetings - Share knowledge and case studies to key stakeholders.

WHAT WE ARE SEEKING:

We are looking for passionate and empathetic individuals who are keen to make a difference in the lives of people affected by cancer, particularly within marginalised and vulnerable communities. If you have experience working in health and social care, or have been involved in setting up community support groups, we would love to hear from you. Your ability to understand and navigate complex emotional situations with care and professionalism is essential.

We value a commitment to our mission and appreciate those who can work in line with Islamic principles while being culturally sensitive to the needs of the Muslim community. If you have excellent communication and listening skills, a willingness to learn, and can speak one or more community languages, you will fit right in.

Our Community Cancer Champions play a vital role, contributing around 8 hours a month to support our project, with the flexibility to work either remotely or on-site. If you are passionate about raising awareness of cancer and want to be part of a compassionate and supportive team, we look forward to welcoming you on board!

VOLUNTEER INCENTIVES

As a volunteer, you will receive certified training, with travel expenses reimbursed. You will also benefit from ongoing support, including well-being days, skill-sharing events, and opportunities to participate in stakeholder meetings with healthcare professionals and researchers in cancer support services. These opportunities will help you build your professional network, enhance your CV, and ultimately contribute to improving cancer care for Muslims.
