Macmillan Information and Support Volunteer - North Lanarkshire

What you will be doing:

Meeting and greeting people affected by cancer. Assessing their information and support needs. Offering a listening ear and informal support, giving people an opportunity to talk about their experiences. Helping visitors find appropriate information leaflets and signposting to local support services. Collecting basic data on support provided to people affected by cancer (e.g. number of leaflets given).

The skills you need:

  • Understanding the importance of confidentiality and following procedures
  • Good communication skills, specifically excellent listening skills and being non-judgmental
  • Good organisational skills,
  • Ability to be understanding and empathetic
  • Ability to work well in a team or on own initiative and to be confident when communicating with service users and visitors
  • Ability to use initiative and refer complex issues to the appropriate person when required
  • Available to volunteer for 2 – 3 hrs every other week
